Spectacular Marble Sculpture depicting Medusa.
Provenance Venice, private collection.
The young woman has a perfectly beautiful face, which is neither terrifying nor deformed by fear; it almost seems to express suffering. Some scholars, such as Patrick Haughey, say that such suffering would be due to snake bites and the fact that Medusa is about to transform into a monster.
Medusa is a figure in Greek mythology, along with Steno and Euryale, she is one of the three Gorgons. According to the myth, the Gorgons had the power to petrify anyone who crossed their gaze, and of the three, Medusa was the only one who was not immortal; in most versions she is beheaded by Perseus.
